New DNA Lab Director Announced by CST

CST ANNOUNCES KELEPECZ TO JOIN AS LAB DIRECTOR

 San Diego, CA (RUSHPRNEWS)October 3, 2007 – Crime Scene Technologies, LLC (CST), an independent forensic DNA laboratory serving the justice system, announces that Betty P. Kelepecz has joined the company as Lab Director.  Kelepecz most recently served as the President of Public Safety Consulting, Inc. and prior to that, as a Senior Vice President of Crossflo Systems, Inc., a San Diego based software company.  

In her position with CST, Kelepecz will oversee the daily operations of CST’s forensic DNA lab, which is accredited by the American Society of Crime Lab Directors- Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD-LAB).  CST provides comprehensive DNA testing with results averaging 30 days.  The Lab Director is responsible for maintaining and managing the ASCLD-LAB accreditation process and is ultimately responsible for the security, safety and quality assurance of the lab.  Kelepecz succeeds former Lab Director, President and Founder of CST, retired Carlsbad Police Sergeant Bob Wick who recently passed away.

Kelepecz came to San Diego after a 23-year law enforcement career in
Los Angeles, retiring in 2003 as a Commander with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to accept appointment as the Chief of Police of the San Diego Harbor Police Department.  In 2005, she retired from law enforcement after a total of 25 years. 

“During my 25 year law enforcement career that included tours as a criminal detective as well as in the LAPD Crime Lab, I became painfully aware how critical the need is for fast, accurate DNA analysis for the successful investigation of crimes,” noted Kelepecz. “Becoming a part of CST allows me to continue Bob’s vision to assist the justice community in identifying, apprehending, prosecuting or, just as importantly, exonerating criminal suspects, thus bringing closure to the crime victims and their families.  It’s a unique opportunity to use all of my knowledge, skills and experience to support our justice community in a very meaningful way.”

“Betty’s unique background as a former microbiologist, attorney, law enforcement leader and prior Commanding Officer of the LAPD’s Crime Lab, and her recent experience in private industry make her an outstanding addition to our company,” said Brian Mooney, CST President and CEO.  “She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience and a rare combination of scientist and accomplished leader.  We are extremely honored that she has agreed to join us.” 

Recognized by numerous regional and national leadership organizations, she is a recipient of the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE) highest award in 2004 and the Police Executive Research Forum’s (PERF) prestigious Gary P. Hayes Award for leadership in 2002.   Kelepecz is active in many organizations both in private industry as well as the law enforcement community. Most recently she was elected to the Board of Directors of the Integrated Justice Information Systems (IJIS) Institute where she sits on the Executive, Finance and Intergovernmental Relations Committees.  She also sits on the Homeland Security and CJIS Committees of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and is a past President and Charter member of NAWLEE.  She is a graduate of the University of
Southern California, holds a Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law and was admitted to the California State Bar in 1990.
