Apatow, Brooks and Gelbart To Keep Academy Audience in Stitches
Beverly Hills, CA (RUSHPRNEWS) October 18, 2007 — Three of the funniest forces in filmmaking – Judd Apatow, James L. Brooks and Larry Gelbart – will come together to crack the code of contemporary screen comedy during the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Three Masters of Comedy” event on Friday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

 They will participate in a candid roundtable discussion about influences, styles and other comedic niceties, offering up their collective insight into what makes “funny business” work on screen. The event is presented under the banner of the Academy’s Jack Oakie Celebration of Comedy in Film.
Apatow is the writer-director-producer of “Knocked Up” (2007) and “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” (2005) as well as producer of “Superbad” (2007) and “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006).
Brooks has earned eight Oscar® nominations and taken home three Academy Awards® as the writer, director and producer of “Terms of Endearment” (1983). He was also nominated for writing and producing “Broadcast News” (1987) and “As Good As It Gets” (1997). Brooks most recently shared writing and producing credits on this summer’s “The Simpsons Movie.”
Gelbart is an Oscar nominee for the screenplays of “Tootsie” (1982) and “Oh, God!” (1977). He also created the landmark TV comedy series “M*A*S*H,” for which he wrote, directed and/or produced more than 50 episodes.
The Jack Oakie Celebration of Comedy in Film provides an opportunity for established filmmakers and historians to share their experiences and to discuss the specific challenges and delights of the comedy genre. The celebration is named in memory of character actor Jack Oakie, whose career included vaudeville, Broadway musicals and 87 motion pictures, most of them comedies or musical comedies. He appeared in such notable films as “Once in a Lifetime,” “Million Dollar Legs” and “It Happened Tomorrow,” and received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in “The Great Dictator.”
Tickets to “Three Masters of Comedy – Judd Apatow, James L. Brooks and Larry Gelbart” are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with valid ID. Tickets may be purchased online at www.oscars.org until noon PT on the day of the event. There are no minimum order requirements and no transaction or processing fees. Tickets may also be purchased by mail or in person at the Academy box office during regular business hours.
