Afghan President to Address UN General Assembly Debate

NEW YORK,(RUSHPRNEWS)09/24/2008-Afghan President Hamid Karzai is to address the United Nations General Assembly Wednesday, on the second day of the U.N.'s annual week-long debate in New York. President Karzai is expected to discuss the increasingly deadly fight against al-Qaida-linked militants in his country.
 
On the sidelines of the General Assembly Tuesday, Mr. Karzai said at a meeting of the Asia Society he supported the idea of forming a joint military task force with the United States and Pakistan to secure both sides of the Afghan-Pakistani border.

Other speakers expected at the Assembly Wednesday include the presidents of Mexico, Israel, and Colombia, as well as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Cuba's José Ramón Machado Ventura of the Council of State and Ministers.

U.S. President George Bush made his final address to the General Assembly Tuesday.

He spoke of successes in fighting terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan, and said the U.N. and other multilateral organizations are needed more urgently than ever to confront extremists.

President Bush called Iran one of the few nations continuing to support terrorism. He urged the U.N. to enforce sanctions against Iran and North Korea for their nuclear programs.

In his speech, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad criticized Western powers for trying to block Tehran's nuclear activities, which he said are peaceful.

He also said that what he called "the American empire" in the world is coming to an end, and advised the next U.S. leaders to limit interference to their own borders.
