CNN breaking into the global newswire business. AP struggling with distribution challenges
by Dan Bloom
ATLANTA,GA(RushPRnews)10/30/08--- Move over AP, Reuters UPI and AFP. CNN is setting up a competing news wire service that will deliver news stories to newspapers and Internet news sites 24/7/365. In a recent letter to newspaper editors around the world, CNN says its CNN Wire will "provide stories of interest to your newspaper and online readers -- breaking news, national, international, business, politics, consumer, medical, and more. We are talking to a variety of newspapers and newspaper groups, large and small, about this project."
Joe Middelburg, CNN's vice president for sales and affiliate relations, told RushPRnews in a recent email: "Like most major news organizations, CNN has its own internal wire service to provide original reporting on world news. With a worldwide staff of 3,800 people, CNN is able to maintain a strong flow of up-to-the-minute stories. We now believe we have the base to offer this service to other news organizations."
Among those considering buying the CNN wire service are the New York Daily News, Newsday and The Cleveland Plain Dealer, according sources.
The CNN wire service comes as the Associated Press is dealing with its own distribution problems, the sources said.
So start looking for those three letters -- CNN -- appearing soon above news stories in your favorite hometown newspaper, from Montreal to Missoula, from Los Angeles to Virginia Beach and New York. The newspaper business will never be the same.
