At United Nations Conference, Developing Countries Moved Forward While Lame Duck Administration Quacked Through its Last Climate Negotiations

POZNAN(RushPRnews)12/15/08– The 14th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change came to an end on December 12 with the framework for 2009 climate negotiations in place. Two weeks of talks included strong signals for action by developing countries.

Statement by Jake Schmidt, International policy director for the Natural Resources Defense Council:

“At the end of these negotiations, developing countries are primed for strong action on global warming. With President-Elect Obama in office, the U.S. will field a team that will move forward with these developing countries in crafting an international agreement to fight global warming.

“A president working with the international community can prevent the worst impacts of global warming, create millions of new green jobs, produce more energy from clean sources and use energy more efficiently.

“The politics of global warming have completely changed in America. For the past seven years, states, cities, the business community, and the U.S. Congress have moved forward. The next president can build on their work and make real progress towards a new climate treaty.”
