Dwyane Wade Sets Miami's NBA Scoring Record

Dwyane Wade passed Alonzo Mourning on Saturday to become the Miami Heat's all-time leading scorer.

NEW YORK (RushPRnews)3/16/09- There isn't much Miami Heat All-Star guard Dwyane Wade hasn't accomplished during his brilliant career in the National Basketball Association. And the 27-year-old phenom known as “Flash” and “D-Wade” continues to amaze with his remarkable play.

Wade scored 50 points with 10 rebounds and nine assists to help Miami pull off a huge win over the Utah Jazz in triple-overtime 140-129 on Saturday. “Just another day at the office,” Wade said.

But he was wrong. Not only did he tie his career high in scoring, he also passed his mentor and former teammate Alonzo Morning to become the leading scorer in franchise history.

“Records are made to be broken,” Mourning said after Wade’s dunk with 11:05 left in the third quarter. “If anybody had to break the all-time scoring record, I wanted it to be D-Wade. I'm proud of him and I think the best is yet to come.”

D-Wade received a standing ovation from the crowd when the record was announced during the next stoppage in play, raising his arm to acknowledge the cheers.

The new record now stands at 9, 489 points in 380 career regular season appearances. At the rate Wade is going, he will continue to set the bar high. He came into the day averaging an NBA-best 29.7 points per game this season, which led many to believe that he would set a new record.

“It's not something I think about,” Wade said earlier in the week. “It's about winning right now.”
But even deep down inside it’s hard to believe that Wade did not expect to atop the Heat franchise scoring record considering the fact that he has been shooting over 56 percent since the All-Star break.


This sits well for the Heat improving seven games over .500 (36-29), and making a push for the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Heat are currently ranked 5th in the East trailing the Atlanta Hawks (38-28).

Similar to LeBron James in Cleveland or Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles, Flash continues to nearly single-handedly carry his team.

A remarkable turnaround from last season when his team won just 15 games. But that was then and D-Wade has put Miami back on the map. “There is no doubt in my mind that he [Wade] is the most valuable player of the league this year,” Mourning said.

Others scores in the NBA

Nuggets 107, Clippers 94 - Marcus Camby struggled against his former team, scoring 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in the loss.

Timberwolves 108, Bobcats 100 - Rookie Kevin Love scored 22 points.

Bulls 97, Hornets 79 - Ben Gordon scored 27 points for Chicago and the defense stepped up to shut down the Hornets.

Spurs 88, Rockets 85 - Tony Parker scored 28 points.

Suns 106, Thunder 95 - Phoenix snaps a six-game losing streak.
