Academy Circles the Globe for Final Screening

Beverly Hills, CA (RPRN) 5/27/2009 — “Salim Baba,” “Please Vote for Me” and “My Kid Could Paint That” will screen as the final installment of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 27th annual “Contemporary Documentaries” series on Wednesday, June 3, at 7 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Admission is free.

“Salim Baba” recounts the story of 55-year-old Salim Muhammad, who since the age of 10, has made his living screening discarded film scraps for kids in North Kolkata, India, using a hand-cranked projector that he inherited from his father. Directed by Tim Sternberg and produced by Francisco Bello, Scott Mosier and Raja Dey, “Salim Baba” earned an Academy Award® nomination for Documentary Short Subject.

“Please Vote for Me,” directed by Weijun Chen and produced by Don Edkins, follows a third grade class in Wuhan, China, holding an election to select a Class Monitor. Chen’s documentary is an inquiry into how democracy might be received if it ultimately came to China, and whether democracy is a universal value that reflects human nature.

“My Kid Could Paint That,” directed and produced by Amir Bar-Lev, is a family drama that unfolds against a backdrop of media stardom, art-world excess and the ephemeral nature of truth. Its focus is four-year-old Marla Olmstead, who rocketed from total obscurity to international renown – selling over $300,000 worth of abstract paintings before the family was accused of fraud. Bar-Lev will be present to take questions from the audience following the screening.
