Kanye West Upstages Taylor Swift at VMAs

NEW YORK (RPRN) 09/14/09 — Country darling Taylor Swift appeared visibly upset after rapper Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech at MTV's 'Video Music Awards' Sunday night

Irate rapper interrupts teenager’s acceptance speech

Earlier this year, rapper Kanye West promised an end to his ego-driven antics after being skewered on an episode of animated comedy “South Park.” That promise went unfulfilled Sunday night, as the popular musician interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at MTV’s “Video Music Awards” because he thought Beyoncé was more deserving of the award for Best Female Video.

“Taylor, I’m really happy for you,” West began, as he walked out on stage and took the microphone from the puzzled country singer. “I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time…one of the best videos of all time.”

West shrugged and left the stage to boos from the crowd. Though audience members stood up and cheered for Swift, the 19-year-old was unable to recompose herself in time to finish the speech. Beyoncé invited Swift back onstage while accepting a different award and allowed her a second chance to address the crowd.

West later posted an apology on his official Web site, claiming that he met Swift’s mother backstage after the incident and was treated to “the same thing my mother would have said.”

Swift received the award for her “You Belong With Me” music video, in which she played the role of a bookish girl with a crush on her next-door neighbor, as well as the role of a catty cheerleader vying for the same object of affection.

Beyoncé was up for Best Female Video for her “Single Ladies” music video. Other nominees included Lady Gaga for “Poker Face,” Kelly Clarkson for “My Life Would Suck Without You,” Katy Perry for “Hot N Cold” and Pink for “So What.” The winner was chosen based on viewer votes.
