HOLLYWOOD (RPRN) 10/08/09 — By Adam Shapiro
Actor Mel Gibson’s slate was wiped clean Tuesday, when Judge Lawrence J. Mira agreed to expunge a pair of drunken driving convictions stemming from his infamous July 2006 arrest in Malibu. After being spotted driving more than 85 mph on the Pacific Coast Highway, Gibson was hastily pulled over and proceeded to engage in an anti-Semitic rant that made headlines and vilified the Oscar winner.
Gibson pleaded no contest to a driving under the influence charge as part of the plea deal. The original breathalyzer test showed Gibson’s blood-alcohol level to be .12%; the legal limit is .08%. He was sentenced to three years of probation and as part of his penance, had to enroll in an alcohol abuse program, attend more than 11 months of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, make a number of public service announcements and pay $1300 in fines.
As a first-time drunken-driving offender, Gibson was eligible to have his criminal record erased after the successful completion of his probation. His attorney filed a Motion to Dismiss on Sept. 21.
