NEW YORK (RPRN) 10/13/09 — Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom will be working to make the world a better place for young people as he steps into his new role as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Mr. Bloom, who has starred in the highly successful “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, was appointed by UNICEF in recognition of his commitment to the rights of children worldwide. “We are proud to have Orlando Bloom as one of the strong voices for vulnerable children,” said the agency’s Executive Director, Ann M. Veneman. The Hollywood actor has already seen the work carried out by UNICEF in Nepal, Russia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. On his first visit to Nepal in 2007, he was able to see how UNICEF's water and sanitation programmes benefit local families, and he spoke about the importance of education. In addition, he agreed to perform a small role in the local school radio production after being asked by the students.
