Annie Leibovitz's Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop (born James Newell Osterberg, Jr. on April 21, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and occasional actor.[1] Although he has had only limited mainstream commercial success, Iggy Pop is considered an influential innovator of punk rock, hard rock, and other related styles.[1] He is sometimes referred to by the nickname “the Iguana”, and is widely acknowledged as one of the most dynamic stage performers of all time.[1] Pop began calling himself Iggy after his first band in high school, The Iguanas.[2]

Iggy Pop was the lead singer of The Stooges, a late 1960s/early 1970s rock band who were influential in the development of the nascent hard rock and punk rock genres. The Stooges became infamous for their live performances, during which it was not uncommon for Pop (who traditionally performs bare-chested) to self-mutilate, verbally abuse the audience, expose himself and leap off the stage (the first or among the first to stage dive). The Stooges were unsuccessfully nominated seven times to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before it was announced they will be inducted as part of the class of 2010.

Abba Wraps up Award

ABBA was a Swedish pop music group formed in Stockholm in 1972, consisting of Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida), Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Agnetha Fältskog (Anna). Fältskog and Ulvaeus were a married couple, as were Lyngstad and Andersson during their career, although both couples later divorced. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, and they topped the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982.

ABBA gained international popularity employing catchy song hooks, simple lyrics, sound effects (reverb, phasing) and a Wall of Sound achieved by overdubbing the female singers’ voices in multiple harmonies. As their popularity grew, they were sought after to tour Europe, Australia, and North America, drawing crowds of ardent fans, notably in Australia. Touring became a contentious issue, being particularly cumbersome for Fältskog, but they continued to release studio albums to widespread commercial success. At the height of their popularity, however, both relationships began suffering strain that led ultimately to the collapse of first the Ulvaeus-Fältskog marriage (in 1979) and then of the Andersson-Lyngstad marriage in 1981. In the late 1970s and early 1980s these relationship changes began manifesting in the group’s music, as they produced more thoughtful, introspective lyrics with different compositions.

Jimmy Cliff "You Can Get It If You Really Want"

The Honourable Jimmy Cliff, OM (born James Chambers; 1 April 1948) is a Jamaican ska and reggae singer, musician and actor. He is the only currently living musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievement in the arts and sciences. He is best known among mainstream audiences for songs such as “Sitting in Limbo”, “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, and “Many Rivers to Cross” from the soundtrack to The Harder They Come which helped popularize reggae across the world;[1] and his covers of Cat Stevens‘ “Wild World” and Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now” from the film Cool Runnings. Outside of the reggae world, he is probably best known for his film appearance in The Harder They Come. Jimmy Cliff will be one of 5 performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Genesis In The Beginning

Genesis are an English rock band that formed in 1967. The band currently comprises the longest-tenured members Phil Collins (lead vocals and drums), Mike Rutherford (guitar and bass guitar), and Tony Banks (keyboards). Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett also played major roles in the band in its early days. Genesis are among the top 30 highest-selling recording artists of all time with approximately 150 million albums sold worldwide,[1] including 21.5 million albums sold in the United States.

Genesis began as a 1960s pop band playing moody, simple keyboard-driven melodies. During the 1970s, they evolved into a progressive rock band, incorporating complex song structures and elaborate instrumentation, while their concerts became theatrical experiences with innovative stage design, pyrotechnics, elaborate costumes and onstage stories. This second phase was characterised by lengthy performances such as the 23 minute “Supper’s Ready” and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, the 1974 concept album. In the 1980s, the band produced accessible pop music based on melodic hooks; this change of direction gave them their first number one album in the United Kingdom, Duke, and their only number one single in the United States, “Invisible Touch“.

The Hollies

The Hollies are an English rock group from Manchester formed in the early 1960s. Known for their distinctive vocal harmony style, they became one of the leading British groups of the era. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries, although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966. Along with the Rolling Stones and The Searchers, they are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that has never officially broken up and which continues to record and perform to the present. The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.[1]

The original lineup included Allan Clarke as lead vocalist, Graham Nash as guitarist and vocalist, Vic Steele (real name Vic Farrell, 1945) on guitar, with Eric Haydock and Don Rathbone rounding out the group on bass guitar and drums. Steele left in May 1963, shortly before they signed to Parlophone as label-mates of the Beatles. Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott joined the band in quick succession in 1963; both had played in a Nelson-based band, the Dolphins, Bernie Calvert, who replaced Haydock in 1966, was also a Dolphin member.

The group’s first U.S. album release came in 1964 as part of the first wave of British Invasion acts. They are commonly associated with Manchester, as some of the original Hollies grew up in the city. In a 2009 interview, member Graham Nash said that the group decided just prior to a performance to call themselves the “Hollies” because of their admiration for Buddy Holly.[2]
