NEW YORK (RPRN) 07/13/10 — New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning of a massive heart attack
Steinbrenner, who turned 80 on July 4, reportedly suffered a heart attack at his home in Tampa, Fla., Monday night, the team confirmed Tuesday. He was taken to hospital after emergency crews arrived at Steinbrenner's house. Team spokesman Howard Rubenstein said Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning.
The once-controversial figure known as "The Boss" had seen his health decline in recent years, and he had largely been kept out of the public eye.
Steinbrenner, known to many as "The Boss", took over the Yankees in 1973. Under his ownership, the team captured seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants.
Steinbrenner officially turned over day-to-day operations of the Yankees organization in November 2008 to his sons Hank and Hal.
Steinbrenner's death came two days after the Yankees' beloved public-address announcer Bob Sheppard died at 99.
The Yankees are +125 to win their second straight American League Pennant.
