Jay Leno attempted to redefine prime time by replacing many scripted dramas at 9pm with the weeknight NBC talk show The Jay Leno Show. Leno left the flagship NBC The Tonight Show to host his new show. Although the move saved the NBC network a lot of money over the scripted dramas it replaced, the network bowed to affiliates who were seeing their 10pm news ratings crushed by Leno’s weak lead-in.
When Leno returned to The Tonight Show, there was outrage from fans of forced out host Conan O’Brien. Both versions of the show were put up for an Emmy nom. The Television Academy also didn’t nominate Two and Half Men star Charlie Sheen, in trouble with the law for Christmas Day domestic violence with his estranged wife.
