| Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network |
HOLLYWOOD, CA (RPRN) 10/16/10 — by Ray Subers
The Social Network dipped a light 30 percent to hold off relatively average newcomers Life as We Know It and Secretariat. Meanwhile, My Soul to Take and It's Kind of a Funny Story failed to incite much interest. Overall business was off a rough 16 percent from the same timeframe last year when Couples Retreat led with $45.4 million.
The Social Network added $21.6 million for a 14-day total of $52.1 million. Columbus Day saw many people off from work and school on Monday and aided in all movies' holds. That helped Social Network pull ahead of the similarly-themed 21 through the same point. Life as We Know It debuted in second place with $19.7 million.
This was solid by genre standards and higher than The Back-Up Plan, though it was the worst start yet for a movie headlined by Katherine Heigl.
Secretariat earned $18 million in its first week, far short of Seabiscuit's $31.6 million, and it sold less than half as many tickets. Still, Secretariat easily outperformed other horse-centric movies like Flicka and Dreamer. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole had the best hold among nationwide releases, easing 29 percent to $9.4 million. After a slow start, the Zach Snyder-directed 3D animated adventure has earned $41.8 million in three weeks. The Town spent its fifth week in the Top Five, falling 31 percent to $9.1 million. In four weeks, the Ben Affleck drama leads all September 2010 releases with $76.5 million. Wes Craven's My Soul to Take failed to take hold with audiences and opened to just $8.8 million. That's the worst-ever seven-day start for a 3D movie at over 1,500 theaters. The week's other new nationwide release, It's Kind of a Funny Story, finished in 12th place with $2.8 million at 742 theaters.
