Happy New Year! I hope everyone had wonderful holidays. We did but it was hectic as usual, a good kind of hectic but that’s what it is with kids right? It is a new year and like everyone else, time to get back on track. Back to routine, healthy eating, exercise… you know the same boring resolutions each year. But this time, I want to look at healthy eating in a different light. What I need to do is healthy shopping, and pay even more attention to food labeling. Let me share with you a recent post I read on the Stonyfield Canada Facebook page about natural vs. artificial Trans Fats.
It really caught my attention because I did not realize that certain types of Trans Fats are actually good. These good ones are healthy natural Trans Fats, and they are created in the stomachs of ruminant animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, etc. and make their way into the fat stores of the animals. I pay a lot of attention when shopping for food for myself and even more so for my kids (which is why I refuse to even take them with me). How am I supposed to verify sodium levels and calorie content on a label while my 4 year old is driving his little grocery cart into the back of people’s knees? They have so little patience being there for even a 45 min. trip to the grocery store, that now with 1.5 hour trip full of label reading, forget about it. I look at calorie content, fat, sugar, sodium levels, etc… but truth be told, I never really paid attention to the level of Trans Fats. All I knew was Trans Fats = bad fats. So if I saw 0g Trans Fats on the packaging of McCain French fries (no judgment please), I thought good, these can’t be all that bad right?
So what are these good Trans Fats and what does it all mean? I did some research and I found an interesting article written by Mike Geary, a Certified Nutrition Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer. There are definitely some good fats out there folks but that doesn’t mean we can go on a good Trans Fat binge. It just means that when we look at the labeling of certain meat and dairy products (especially organic products) and see a small quantity of Trans Fats, no need to stop in your tracks. You can still enjoy your favourite foods but this time, you’ll be a much better informed consumer.
