NYC Gallery Launches Online Exhibition Of Vintage Carpets By The Great Masters

NEW YORK, NY (RPRN) 01/26/11 — Nazmiyal Collection is one of the premier antique rug galleries in New York City. Today they launched an online exhibition of rugs that were designed by some of the greatest names in the art world. Some of the works include pieces that were designed by Dali, Kandinsky, Picasso and many more.

The latest collection of carpets from Nazmiyal includes works from international artists and master weavers encompassing a range of styles that eloquently express the versatility and evolution of the carpet as a functional and decorative objet d′art. This unique collection represents a complete historic pictorial from the archetypal Persian carpet to the avant-garde. Nazmiyal’s virtual gallery of artisan carpets includes carpets and rugs from renowned master weavers and exclusive craftspeople who worked in independent studios.

From Persia, the works of Haji Jalili in Tabriz, Aboul Ghasem Kermani in Kerman, and Kashan’s Mohtashem Kashan are featured for their outstanding style and craftsmanship. The skilled weavers who worked for the Ziegler studios also excelled in the production of artisan carpets in the lush Persian style, which earns them a place in the exhibition among the weaving legends who continue to influence carpet

Designs from Europe and Scandinavia dominated trends in the late 1800s through the pop-art craze of the 1970s. Carpets featured in Nazmiyal’s global collection were produced by innovators, trendsetters and artistic celebrities that have participated in the evolution of design as it is today. These master weavers adapted their styles and flourished as methodologies changed and general philosophies were forged. Industrialization, globalization, war, political influences, music and the other arts contributed to subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle changes in the overall course of design. The transition from the arts and crafts movement to art nouveau, art deco, minimalism and pop-art was a global undertaking that is effectually represented in Nazmiyal’s Collection of Master Artisan Rugs and Carpets.

Scandinavian master weavers and textile designers made a big impression featuring a vast array of art deco textiles at the International Exposition of 1925. Today, their cutting-edge carpets still hold a timeless appeal. Carpets from the famous Märta Måås Fjetterström, who is behind the MMF name, are featured next to pieces from Rakel Callander, Märta Gahn and independent Scandinavian artists that each developed a unique style. Across the ocean, the American weaver John Kachel produced carpets that are intimately associated with the region and equipment of the time. Haute couture designer Pierre Cardin, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky and Salvador Dali are among the contemporary artists and designers whose distinct carpets are featured in this online exhibition.
