Network Communication Systems: telecare solutions for supported living
DayBreak supported living centre

LONDON, UK (RPRN) 08/01/11 — Network Communication Systems Limited (NCS) is an independent company specialising in the design, manufacture and supply of door access controls and most aspects of security equipment. Formed in Doncaster in 1992, NCS work alongside local authorities and housing associations to provide the various social alarms and access control systems required to ensure the safety of elderly or vulnerable residents.

Recently, NCS designed and installed a complete security system for DayBreak, a supported living centre in Leicestershire. The centre, owned by East Midlands Housing and operated by the Affinity Trust, was completed in December 2010 and opened in January 2011. With its bright atmosphere, comfortable apartments and 24-hour support, DayBreak creates a safe living environment for adults with learning disabilities.

To meet the needs of DayBreak’s residents, Network Communications installed a selection of telecare equipment ranging from door monitoring systems to advanced motion sensors.

The main entrance to the centre is guarded by a digital door entry panel, which from the outside can only be opened with a numeric code. Guests can also use the panel to speak to the staff inside, who are able to open the door remotely. Each of the centre’s eight apartments is equipped with a door entry system, all of which are activated by an individual swipe card. This allows tenants to come and go as they please – the systems also respond to fobs held by the staff, should a resident need assistance. Every door is also fitted with a basic contact alarm which can be set to trigger when the door is opened.

One of the more advanced systems provided

by NCS is the passive infra-red (PIR) motion detector. This state of the art alarm setup was installed to monitor movement inside DayBreak’s flats. It is, to all intents and purposes, a burglar alarm, but it has another equally useful function: When residents are at home during the day, the alarm can be switched to “in” mode, wherein the system uses its motion sensors differently to detect long periods of inactivity and signs of illness, falls or seizures. Should it pick up anything out of the ordinary, it will automatically alert a member of staff.

Claire Geary, support manager at DayBreak, quotes: “A lot of our residents are epileptic, so having the detectors there gives them a lot more privacy. They can happily stay in their rooms without us checking on them all the time. It gives them a bit of their independence back and lets them get on with their day.”

Not forgetting the safety of the staff and the unpredictable nature of their work, NCS also installed a system to protect them in the event of an attack. This is a separate alarm which stands alone from the other systems and can be activated in an emergency by a panic button worn as a pendant.

Commenting on the DayBreak installation, NCS business development manager Gerry Wynne remarks: “We’re very proud to have been involved with the project. It’s fantastic to be able to use our innovative telecare equipment with such a forward-thinking establishment, and we hope to continue our work with similar institutions in the future.”

By providing a variety of reliable, easy-to-use security systems, Network Communication Systems have helped to make life easier for the residents and staff at DayBreak.
