“The Art of Fixing Things” is more than just another “how-to-do-it” book. It contains 150 tips and tricks to repair things, and save money, but it is also funny, and contains a serious message. Our society cannot continue to throw things away when broken, if we ever want to get out of debt.

Basic tool use, how to make your car last longer, the basics of repairing household appliances, and garden machines are covered. The book contains 185 crisp black and white photo illustrations, direct and simple explanations, and easy to follow directions for learning the correct use of hand and power tools, doing repairs and avoiding poor quality consumer goods and tools.

 

Topics like removing a stubborn oil filter, getting your car or lawnmower to start, the proper use of a screwdriver or pliers, understanding threads, making tools to repair them , and which things to grease, and how, are covered. Using spit and wire for repairs is funny and helpful. If you ever wondered how to avoid over tightening a screw, or bolt, this book will tell you. If a screw is stripped, there is a strategy to remove it. It even contains a trick to avoid making a mess when painting. Hardware is made simple. Advice is given on avoiding injuries.

About the author.

 

Lawrence Pierce is a retired Vancouver, BC litigation lawyer who spent the last 55 years fixing things. He learned the basics from his father, who grew up during the 1930’s in York, Nebraska, where he was raised by his grand-father, another do-it-yourselfer.
During his childhood in Kansas City, Missouri, and high school years in Richardson, Texas he continued to learn about machinery, by repairing several motorcycles, and English sports cars, and later as a journeyman mechanic in San Francisco, California, and in Whitehorse, Yukon. He rounded out his skills renovating houses and farming in Canada, during the 1970’s and presently. He lives on Hornby Island BC.
