70 FAMOUS FILM PEOPLE SEND GREETINGS TO MARK THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MONTRÉAL WORLD FILM FESTIVAL

MONTRÉAL (rushprnews), July 18, 2006 – The Montréal World Film Festival has collected greetings from seventy great international actors, film makers and film professionals who have participated at the Festival over the three decades of its existence.

Actors and writers, directors and producers, distributors and festival directors, from Canada and from around the world, have sent their best wishes and fondly recalled their experiences of the Festival, among them such famous and diverse names as Liv Ullmann, Zhang Yimou, Andrzej Zulawski, Dino de Laurentiis, Pedro Almodovar, Gérard Depardieu, Anna Karina, Yoshimitsu Morita, Jackie Chan, Majid Majidi and Patrice Leconte.

Their notes were collected not to write a history of the MWFF but to mark a milestone in its existence, to recall its illustrious past via comment and anecdotes, to compile a collective souvenir of the Festival. The result is a collage assembled from the impressions of some 70 prominent screen artists and officials from all continents – comments about the Festival itself, about local audiences and about its host city – from people who have become the Festival's ambassadors over the years.

Parce que c'est vrai qu'il ne faut pas systématiquement jeter la pierre au cinéma américain. Les Américains ont fait de très grands films dans les années trente, dans les années cinquante. Mais malheureusement, ils ne connaissent ni leur cinéma ni leurs auteurs. C'est nous qui les connaissons. »

" The first time I went to the festival, it was 1979 when my film TALL SHADOWS OF THE WIND … was accepted to be in competition at the Montréal Film Festival. I believe my film was the first Iranian film in this festival, and my country was in a turmoil after the revolution, so no Iranian representative had come to the festival except me. "

Après quelques années de galères, je réalise enfin Train de vie, mon second long-métrage. Que tout le monde attend. Et qui s'envole. Grâce à Trahir. Grâce à Montréal. Grâce à Serge et Danièle. Grâce à ce public formidable.»

Bref, vive le cinéma, dans son opulence, sa surprise, ses différences ! J'étais heureux à Montréal, loin de tout ce que je connais de carnivore, fricovore, politicovore et interêtovore, et qui forme la base, le tréfonds et les soutes de tant d'autres festivals. »

30th anniversary of the MWFF

As noted above, the MWFF this year will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary: from August 24 to September 4. The only general category competitive film festival in North America that is recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), the Montreal World Film Festival has promoted cultural diversity since it was created in 1977
