DiCaprio, Eastwood, Mirren and "Babel" of Languages Lead Golden Globe Noms
By Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn
HOLLYWOOD-CA(rushprnews)12/14/20006 -- Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood and Helen Mirren will battle themselves at the Golden Globes this year as each took two nominations in their respective categories when voting was announced this morning. The other news was the globalization of the Globes, as the five-language film "Babel," starring Brad Pitt, led balloting with seven noms, while foreign language pictures were represented in top categories like Best Director and Actress. Plus two U.S. films crept into the Foreign Language zone. Comprende?
DiCaprio is up for best actor for two films, "Blood Diamond" and "The Departed," whose director Martin Scorsese is head to head with Eastwood in the directing field. Scorsese has lost out to Eastwood before but there's a chance of Eastwood cancelling himself out, notes entertainment newsmagazine Hollywood Today (www.hollywoodtoday.net)
Both of his ying and yang WWII dramas are up, "Flags of our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima." The latter, also honored by a number of critic's associations this year, is in Japanese. Which led to the U.S. film's nomination in the foreign language category. Capisca?
It's joined there by Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto," which is in something like Mayan. Yet neither U.S. film is eligible for an Academy Award in the Foreign Language category (only overseas productions need apply for that Oscar). And it's joined in the Golden Globe nominations with "Pan's Labyninth" and "The Lives of Others," which both have non-foreign language Oscar aspirations. And more notably in the category is "Volver," which actually has a slim chance of a full best picture or director Oscar nomination but more likely will get a best actress shot with Penelope Cruz in a Spanish-speaking role. Verstehen Sie?
If you, like Oscar Wilde, consider the U.S. and the U.K. two nations divided by a common language, than the Queen's English and Helen Mirren will be your cup of tea this year. Mirren's up for three acting kudos, two for playing Queen Elizabeths - QEII in best picture nominee "The Queen" and her mother Queen Elizabeth in HBO's "Elizabeth I." For the latter, she is nominated in the best actress in a motion picture or miniseries made for TV - where she will compete against herself from "Prime Suspect: The Final Act." Comprenez-vouz?
Still don't understand? Doesn't matter, that's what will make it fun at the 64th annual Golden Globe Awards this year, when they try to break their two-year losing streak (after a 10 and 1 record) as an accurate predictor of the Academy Awards' Best Picture. And the year the voting organization of international journalists behind the Globes will have to live up to their name: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The awards will be presented Jan. 15 and televised for the 12th consecutive year on NBC. Warren Beatty will receive the Cecil B. DeMille award.
Complete List of nominations follows.
