RWANDA, (RUSHPRNEWS) February 3, 2008At least two powerful earthquakes rocked Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo starting at around 2:35 PM Eastern Standard Time, killing at least 27 here in Rwanda, possibly more and injuring scores. The deaths and injuries in DRC are not known to this reporter.
Here in Rwanda the quake measured 5.0 and in neighboring DRC 6.0.
Five churches have been destroyed, killing more than 20 people in the church, and a mosque collapsed and killed more than seven people inside it. Hotels have collapsed and even the house where I was staying collapsed last night.
This earthquake has been caused by a volcano in the nearby DRC town of Bukavu which is sending out the deadly tremors.
Military helicopters have been evacuating casualties since hospitals and clinics are full in Cyangugu area, located on the border with the Congo and right on lake Kivu.
Everyone in the area have been ordered by government to evacuate from the houses and right now some people are in police stations seeking shelter, and in town and others are inside the national stadium.
No one is allowed in houses. Military helicopters are flying over and over monitoring the situation. All of us are stranded. I am in Kamembe.
The ground is still shaking as I file this story.
