MIAMI (RPRN) 7/06/2009–Crouching in a cage under a banner that reads, “Give Animals in Zoos Their Independence,” and wearing a sexy American-flag bikini, a PETA member will show visitors at the Miami MetroZoo on Saturday, the Fourth of July, why zoos are unsuitable habitats for animals.
Animals’ natural needs are rarely met in zoo environments. Many animals who live in large herds or family groups in the wild are kept alone or, at most, in pairs at zoos. Natural hunting and mating behaviors are virtually eliminated by regulated feeding and breeding regimens. Animals at zoos lack privacy and have little opportunity for mental stimulation or physical exercise. These conditions cause them to exhibit abnormal, self-destructive behaviors called zoochosis.
“Animals treasure their freedom just as we do,” says PETA Director Debbie Leahy. “All they get in a zoo is a life sentence in a cage and abysmal care with no chance for liberty.”
