NASHVILLE, Tenn (RPRN) 7/07/2009– More details following the deaht of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair, who helped put the franchise on the football map, surfaced today.
McNair, 36, was found dead on the Fourth of July with multiple gunshot wounds including one to the head and the body of Sahel Kazemi was found nearby.
The murder weapon was later discovered under her body. Police said Monday that Kazemi had bought a gun Thursday night. The former star quarterback started a relationship with Kazemi, 20, who worked as a waitress in a restaurant familiar to McNair.
Fred McNair, Steve McNair’s oldest brother, said he didn’t know who Kazemi was. Apparently the two were closer than most thought. McNair gave her an Escalade for her birthday and took her on trips to Las Vegas and Key West.
“Earlier this year, Kazemi and McNair took trips to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Florida and Mississippi,†said Farzin Abdi, her nephew.
“McNair had been seen at Kazemi’s Nashville apartment two to three times per week — so often that neighbors wondered whether he had moved in with her,†Abdi said.
On the night of the shooting, police said a witness saw the former NFL star arrive at his condo between 1:30 and 2 a.m. and that Kazemi’s vehicle was already there. Mechelle McNair, the quarterback’s wife of 12 years, has been described by police as very distraught about her husband’s death and hasn’t commented on it.
Police labeled McNair’s death a homicide Sunday, but said they were reviewing every possibility before labeling Kazemi’s.
