Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore confirmed the probe had been launched following complaints that the hotel heiress had been given the red-carpet treatment while serving her 23-day jail term. The Los Angeles Times reported that deputies had complained Hilton was given access to a cellphone instead of being forced to wait in line to use a payphone with other inmates at the Century Regional Detention Center where she was held. However, observers say that given the potential problems that could arise with other inmates and Hilton while in payphone lines, keeping her separated may explain that.
Hilton also received daily visits from senior staff at the facility, with a captain hand-delivering her fan mail instead of receiving it from inmate trusties, the report said.
Jail officials also were ordered to give Hilton a new jail uniform instead of a recycled one, the report added, citing two sheriff’s officials speaking on condition of anonymity.
Michael Gennaco, chief attorney for the Sheriff’s Department’s Office of Independent Review, told The Times he was monitoring the investigation “to make sure the department looks into these matters in an objective and thorough way.â€
Hilton was jailed last month for violating parole in an alcohol-related reckless driving case by repeatedly driving with a suspended license.
