NEW YORK (RUSHPRNEWS) AUGUST 8, 2008–The Grammy winning Queen of hip hop/soul Mary J. Blige was hit with a lawsuit on Tuesday, says The New York Daily News. According to reports, the $2 million lawsuit claims that some of the music on her most recent #1 album, “Growing Pains” was stolen.
Producer Theron (NEEF-U) Feemster wrote the music for the song “Work That,” but the ditty is owned by Dream Family Entertainment.
The suit, filed Manhattan Federal Court, further claimed Dream Family never gave Blige, Feemster, or Geffen Records (the distributor), the rights to use the tune.
“Mr. Feemster created the music while he was under contract with Dream Family. Dream Family then owned the music, yet the music was used without permission in a Mary J. Blige release recording,” said Dream’s lawyer Brian Caplan. “It was released as an album, a single, and in a commercial.
Caplan said that it is still unknown if Blige knew the music was stolen.
At press time, neither Blige, nor Geffen had returned phone calls for comments.
