HOLLYWOOD(RushPRnews)02/23/09–Penélope Cruz wasn’t lying when she said that Woody Allen writes some of the greatest characters for women, taking home a Best Supporting Actress award for her enthralling performance as the eccentric and unstable Maria Helena in “Vicky, Cristina Barcelona”.
“Thank you, Woody, for trusting me with this beautiful character. Thank you for having written, over all these years, some of the greatest characters for women.”
The award was presented to her by previous winners in the category: Whoopi Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Angelica Houston, Eva Marie Saint and Tilda Swinton.
This is Cruz’s first Oscar, though she was nominated for Best Actress in 2006 for “Volver”. Growing up a young girl from Alcobendas, the Oscars, seemed like some far away dream. Now as she says, “This ceremony was a moment of unity for the world because art, in any form, is, has been, and will always be our universal language and we should do everything we can, everything we can, to protect its survival.
