LONDON (RPRN) 7/06/2009–American Serena Williams has beaten her older sister and two-time defending champion Venus Williams to take the Wimbledon women’s tennis title in London. In the fourth all-Williams final at the All England Club, Serena took her third Wimbledon crown, 7-6, 6-2. Serena last won the grass-court tournament in 2003.
The American is now 11-10 all time against her older sister and holds three of the four major tournament titles from the past year (U.S. Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon).
Despite her dominant performance, Serena will remain the world No. 2 player behind Russia’s Dinara Safina when the new rankings are issued. Venus routed Safina, 6-0, 6-1 in the Wimbledon semifinals.
The men’s final is Sunday when world No. 2 player Roger Federer of Switzerland takes on American Andy Roddick.
Federer is trying to win a record 15th major tournament title. Roddick has not been in a major tournament final since 2006, when he lost to Roger Federer at the U.S. Open.
