POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (RUSHPRNEWS) 9/4/08 – Johnny Depp may be better known as fictional pirate Jack Sparrow than as a guitar hero, but the frequent Tim Burton collaborator picked up his ax Friday in Pompano Beach, Fla. to benefit special-needs children through the Dan Marino Foundation.
According to Eonline.com, Depp, 45, played for an hour and a half at Club Cinema alongside the other members of his former band, The Kids, and in front of 2,500 spectators, including his girlfriend, French actress/singer Vanessa Paradis, 35, and daughter Lily-Rose, 9.
Depp and the rest of The Kids entertained the audience with original 1960s-inspired pop tunes, as well as classic covers, according to People.
Formed in 1978, The Kids was Depp’s second band. Depp originally dropped out of high school to pursue music, before he made his big-screen acting debut in the 1984 Wes Craven horror opus “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Since then, Depp has starred in a number of critically acclaimed films, including “Edward Scissorhands,” “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “Finding Neverland.”
Depp will appear in next year’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” helping to complete late actor Heath Ledger’s unfinished role. He, as well as Colin Farrell and Jude Law (who also fill in for Ledger at different points in the film), decided to donate his earnings to Ledger’s daughter, 2-year-old Matilda, who was unintentionally not included in her father’s will, which predated her birth..
