– Some teens who are undergoing changes in their body may feel the process is not happening fast enough or developing the way they would like. So instead of letting nature run its course, many are turning to cosmetic surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
ASPS statistics point to a rise in cosmetic surgery for people who are 13-19 years old, which is proven by 230,000 procedures performed on them in 2011.
The top procedures were: 1. Rhinoplasty, also referred to as nose surgery: 33,892 2. Male breast reduction to correct the effects of overdeveloped male breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia: 14,371 3. Breast augmentation: 8,892 4. Otoplasty, a surgery used to correct deformities of the external ear: 7,489 Teens are also opting for less invasive procedures such as Botox, laser skin resurfacing and laser hair removal.
“Teens are their own worst critics, which is why these statistics come as no surprise to me,” said Dr. Andrew Miller a plastic surgeon in Staten Island. “But instead of focusing on changing the way they look, they are simply improving upon what is already there.”
The reason so many teens are opting for these procedures early on is because they would prefer to have them done sooner, rather than live with their effects and address them later, said Miller. These procedures are commonly performed by surgeons around the world and are not as life altering as say a facelift would be.
The first step in deciding whether a teen is right for cosmetic surgery is through a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. Parental permission is only required for anyone younger than age 18, but after that, there are no requirements.
It is important for the teen to fully disclose their motivations for the surgery they are seeking, as this will give the surgeon a good understanding of their mental and emotional well-being, said Miller.
