Portable Offices react to local authorities announcement that mobile classrooms will provide the solution for the growing number of primary school spaces required around the UK.
In a recent article on the company’s official blog, Portable Offices has commented on the announcement that mobile and temporary classrooms will be use to accommodate the growing number of primary school children who cannot be housed in the limited traditional school spaces.
The news follows a Daily Telegraph survey of council plans for the school place crisis. 50 English local authorities took part in the survey, and a third of those who took part confirmed that they were planning emergency measures to cope with the unprecedented surge in pupil number. Primary measures would include additional portable classrooms, in addition to the conversion of redundant public buildings, such as churches or old police stations.
The government will spend around £5billion to provide extra spaces by 2015, while 190,000 additional spaces are expected to be in place by September of this year.
Modular buildings are seen as an ideal solution for schools, since they’re cost effective and installed with a minimum of fuss, and the minimum disruption to a site. But despite the fact that these buildings are strictly temporary, they can provide all of the facilities that a traditional build can, including heat, electricity and all of the learning aids and accessories that a school needs.
Adrian Witty, Managing Director of Portable Offices, said: “Modular buildings have come a long way from the outdated pre-fab approach and will provide an excellent standard of accommodation for these pupils.
“Nowadays, portable accommodation or modular buildings offer a turn-key solution to new build needs with fast turnarounds of just six to eight weeks in many cases. We have developed a schools package which includes planning approval, essential amenities and ground works and warm, clean, bright state-of-the-art classrooms for a reasonable outlay.”
