Have you checked your site on your smartphone? Does it look as good on your tablet and smartphone than on your desktop? If not, your site may not be a responsive site and come April 21, Google’s mobile search results may not include you.
Google announced a new round of algorithm updates with a “significant impact” on your mobile search results worldwide for mobile searchers. Starting April 21, Google will be increasing the mobile friendliness factor of a site and use it as a ranking signal. The update improves rankings for sites that provide a mobile-friendly experience to searchers on mobile devices, and, by association, demotes the ranking of sites that do not.
For the newbies, what is a responsive website?
A responsive website dynamically serves all devices on the same set of URLs, meaning your website will look as good whether you are viewing it on a desktop, a tablet or your smartphone, all from the same URL. That’s all there is to a responsive website.
Think of your web content as water. Water is fluid, and whether you pour and contain it in a teapot, a glass or a bottle, it remains fluid and as such, it adapts to its container. You need to think of your web content the same way than you think of water. In the case of your web content, the container is the device that it is viewed and consumed from.
What’s the big deal?
As the trend increases of people adopting mobile devices to access the internet, Google’s algorithms had to evolve to accommodate the patterns of users.
More mobile-friendly websites in search results
Google states in its blog post: “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. ”
As a result of these changes, web surfers will obtain results that are easier to understand and to view based on the device the search is being conducted on. Therefore, if you don’t want to be left out, it is extremely important that you upgrade your website to be responsive.
Google provides many resources and useful tools to facilitate the process. For instance, check out its guide to mobile-friendly sites or identify the troubles spot using the Mobile Usability Test.
