The Wishing Shelf Book Awards from the UK has announced Weeds in Nana’s Garden, a picture book to help explain dementia diseases, as a SILVER MEDAL Winner.
Weeds in Nana’s Garden was chosen as a 2016 SILVER MEDAL Winner by The Wishing Shelf Book Awards in the Books for 6 to 8 Year Olds Category. Judging was completed by teachers and children in 8 UK schools. The books were scored according to editing, theme, style, cover and illustrations. The fact that this book was selected by regular children and teachers from all types of books is what makes this Wishing Shelf Award for a book about Alzheimer’s Disease so valuable.
Canadian Author / Illustrator, Kathryn Harrison is thrilled that children rated this book so highly despite it handling a difficult topic. “I focused on making the book both accurate and appealing for kids,” describes Harrison. “And winning this award is confirmation that my goal was achieved.”
The book tells the story of the bond between a grand-daughter and her Nana within a magical garden. It’s filled with imaginative images to draw in the reader. A candid yet approachable book, it also celebrates the remarkable strength of the heart. After the story, a child-focused and insightful Question and Answer section is included.
What’s more, $1 from the sale of each book is donated to the Alzheimer Society of Canada – Canada’s leading health charity for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
To further expand the book’s reach, Harrison recently launched the book in the French language and will soon be making it available in German and Portuguese languages.
Harrison created this book to improve the lives of families touched by dementia following her own personal experience with her mother’s dementia. Winning this award acknowledges it’s impact and quality. Plus it will also help improve awareness of the book so that more families will benefit from it’s message.
