COBOURG, ONTARIO, CANADA – I Smile For Grandpa was created by Dementia Care Expert, Jaclyn Guenette of Edmonton and Award-winning Author/Illustrator, Kathryn Harrison of Cobourg to improve the lives of families touched by dementia. It explores dementia in a very easy and clear manner. Children at a very young age can begin to understand what their loved one is facing. The collaborators hope that, with the help of their book, people consider ways to keep children involved and talk more openly with them about dementia. It will also help to support dementia awareness. What’s more, Flipturn Publishing, the book’s publisher, will make contributions to the Alzheimer Society of Canada from each purchase.
“I have worked in a hospital Secured Dementia Unit as a Registered Social Worker and Designated Capacity Assessor”, says author Jaclyn Guenette. “Common questions from families with young children are often focused around how to explain this very complicated disease to children,” she continues, “How do we keep the kids involved? How do we reassure them, when there is no cure?” Guenette feels her story can help families and children by addressing these common questions in an inviting, loving, and compassionate way.
The touching book follows the heartwarming relationship between Grandpa and his Little Buddy. When Grandpa is diagnosed with a dementia disease, Little Buddy realizes playing soccer together won’t quite be the same. But, while the activities that Grandpa can do are changing, there is still much fun to be had. In fact, spending time with each other is as special as ever!
Using delightful illustrations , editor and illustrator, Kathryn Harrison, who also created the award-winning children’s book, Weeds in Nana’s Garden, tenderly explores dementia through the innocent eyes of a child. Tips for speaking with children as well as a useful Q&A are also included.
To date, experts have been very positive about the book:
- “This book is so warmly written and illustrated…children who have loved ones touched by dementia will be able to relate to it in a meaningful way, feeling hope and reassurance.“ ~ Kim Pollard, RSW.
- “I would highly recommend this wonderfully illustrated book to both parents and helping professionals.” ~ Jennifer Pearson, MACP, Family Therapist.
In support of the Alzheimer Society of PKLNH, the book will be launched this Saturday, May 26th at the Investor’s Group Walk For Memories in Peterborough Ontario, starting at 9:30am.
