Getting a Medical Marijuana Card
Most states require that you have a medical marijuana license or card to access cannabis products for medical use. This is often the case in states that allow recreational cannabis use as well. To obtain a card, it is important to know the laws in your state and to present documentation showing that your health condition qualifies for a medical marijuana license. The stipulations for getting a medical cannabis card are different in every state. However, you must have a prescription from a licensed physician stating the need for medical cannabis and a photo ID. You must also be included in a medial marijuana registry for your state.
Dr. Peter Grinspoon from Harvard Medical School asserts that some dispensaries will offer in-house examinations. However, it’s best to research the dispensary to make sure it isn’t a “card mill” or a place that will give you a medical marijuana license without knowing your extensive medical history. Can You Get Medical Marijuana In Your State?
If you think medical cannabis can improve your health, find out if getting a cannabis card is permitted in your state of residence. For instance, if you live in Idaho, Nebraska, or American Samoa, medical cannabis cards are not allowed. If you live in Florida, you can obtain a card after paying $75 to the Florida Department of Health after submitting approved documentation from your doctor. The fee must be paid annually to maintain legal access to medical cannabis.
What Documents Do You Need to Get a Medical Marijuana License?
To receive permission to use marijuana for health purposes, you’ll have to get your certifiable documents through a doctor who has been approved by the Office of Medical Marijuana Use. After verification and your initial health screening is complete and you’ve paid your fee to the state, you’ll receive your card. If you or a loved one are receiving medical treatment from a caregiver for a terminal illness, the caregiver may be able to obtain a medical marijuana card for you.
While the state fee in Florida is $75, the fee is as low as $15 in New Mexico and Massachusetts. However, Oregon residents must pay $200 for a medical cannabis card. The card is usually good for one to three years and you may receive a discount on your renewal. If you live in Maryland, you’ll have to renew your license every six years.
What Does a Medical Marijuana License Allow?
Keep in mind that state regulations vary concerning recreational versus medical use of cannabis. The District of Columbia, along with 24 other states, permit recreational marijuana use. Dr. Kevin Boehnke from the University of Michigan’s Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center explains that some states, such as Michigan, do not charge the excise tax for medical marijuana while the tax does apply to recreational users. He also states that the market is introducing more cannabis products that are high in THC and some patients may need a medical marijuana license to receive products that are high in CBD and low in THC.
