Subway Train Collision Kills At Least 6 in Washington, DC

June 23, 2009

WASHINGTON (RPRN) 6/23/2009--Officials in Washington, D.C. say six people have been killed and about 70 injured in a collision of two subway trains during the late afternoon rush hour. Washington's Mayor Adrian Fenty says the casualty toll would make the accident the deadliest in the history of Washington's public subway system.

Scene at subway train crash in Washington, DC 22 Jun 2009The general manager of the subway system, John Catoe, says a train moving at an unknown speed hit a stationary train Monday near a subway station, Fort Totten, on the northeastern edge of Washington close to the state of Maryland.

Catoe says the train that was moving was among the oldest trains in Washington's subway system. He says one of the six people killed was a train operator.

Federal officials are on site to determine the cause of the crash.

Rescuers have been searching the cars from the two trains for other passengers who were aboard when the accident occurred.
